1. Information We Collect
Rule of Thumb is built to work entirely on your device. We do not require you to create an account, and we do not operate a server that stores your business data. The information in the app — client and property details, job notes, photos, room measurements, pricing, quotes, signatures, invoices, and payment records you enter — is provided directly by you and stored locally on your device. We do not automatically collect this information, and we cannot see it.
2. How We Use Your Information
Everything you enter is used solely to provide the app's functionality on your device: building estimates and quotes, scheduling jobs, tracking invoices and payments, and generating PDF documents and reports for your business. We do not use your information for advertising, profiling, or any purpose other than running the app you're using. Some features require device permissions — for example, camera and photo library access to attach job-site photos to a request. These permissions are used only for the feature you invoke them for, and the resulting photos are stored with your other request data on your device.
3. Data Storage & Security
Rule of Thumb does not use a cloud database or remote server to store your business data. All client information, quotes, jobs, invoices, and photos remain on your device unless you choose to export or share them yourself — for example, emailing a quote PDF or exporting a QuickBooks Online CSV file. Because your data isn't transmitted to us, the security of your information depends on the security of your device. We recommend using your device's passcode, biometric lock, and backup features to protect it.
4. Data Sharing & Third-Party Services
We do not sell, rent, or share your information with third parties, because we do not collect or hold it in the first place. Rule of Thumb does not integrate any third-party analytics, advertising, or crash-reporting services. If you purchase Rule of Thumb or a subscription, that transaction is processed entirely by Apple's App Store or Google Play billing systems — we do not receive or store your payment card information. Apple's and Google's own privacy policies govern how they handle that transaction. If you choose to export data, such as a PDF quote or a QuickBooks Online CSV file, that file is shared only with the destination you select. We have no visibility into or control over your own exports.
5. Data Retention & Your Choices
Because your data lives on your device, you are always in control of it. You can review, edit, or delete any client, quote, job, or invoice record directly within the app. Deleting the app removes all locally stored data associated with it, subject to your device's own backup settings — for example, if your device backs up app data to iCloud or a similar service, a copy may persist there until you delete it from that backup as well. We do not retain any copy of your data, because we never received one.
6. Children's Privacy
Rule of Thumb is a business tool designed for painting contractors and is not directed at, marketed to, or intended for use by children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under the age of 13. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us at the address below and we will address it.
7. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in the app or applicable law. If we make material changes, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this page periodically.
